Sarah Palin and the Neo-Vikings

Monday, September 8th, 2008

This is one of the most surreal moments captured and injected into the 2008 presidential campaign. I can understand that politicians have to get their pictures taken with civic groups of all kinds, and I’m so glad for this one, it just makes me chuckle. Come on, who doesn’t like a bit of fur and grr.

If anyone has any context or attribution for this photo, please post a comment.

tetris never gets old

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Tetris has arrived on the iPhone in the form of the new free app Tris. It’s the same old game only revised to respond to iPhone touchscreen gestures: tap to rotate, swipe down to drop. It could not be simpler or more intuitive. I was instantly captivated, yet again, by this ancient game. Oh my, another addiction to manage.

the giant sucking sound in glendale

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

There’s a giant sucking sound in Glendale and it’s sound of the Americana extracting what was left of all the air out of the the commercial retail market. This morning I was casually riding my bike to the dentist and I was struck by the ubiquity of the “For Lease” signs on empty commercial properties lying like frat-room beer empties all over downtown Glendale. The most glaring example of this is the vacant shell of the Barnes & Noble just a few blocks away. B&N moved it’s Glendale operation out of it’s anchor tenancy on Wilson & Glendale Ave over to Americana. In Glendale, this seems to be the trend.

To be fair to Rick Caruso and his $400M controversial behemoth Americana at Brand (I know, the name is horrific), the air has been leaking out of the Glendale commercial real-estate market for years, recently hastened by the “economic downturn” (i.e. recession). Just across the street at the Glendale Marketplace (yes, the place with the frogs… don’t ask) Linens & Things shuttered years ago only to be lured back this year to re-open… and then close again. Likewise downstairs from L&T, the superstore combo of Tower Records and CompUSA (f.k.a. GoodGuys) is totally empty… ouch! Looks like this Americana neighbor is the victim of 3 totally different business plans gone sour.

All I can say is if you are planning on starting a business in downtown Glendale, you better bring your own oxygen.

condaleeza rice is as incompetent as her boss

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

I read with glee Chris Kelly’s post I Want Condi on HuffPost this morning. I particularly liked this bit:

I don’t believe Condoleezza Rice can actually play piano. Everything else she’s ever touched has been a fraud and a catastrophe, why should her alleged musical abilities be any different? Think about it. Think about any event she’s been even remotely involved in since you first heard her name. An endless string of threats and blundering and arrogant bluffs turned squalid pigfucks. It’s not that she can’t do her job; she can’t do anything. I think when she plays piano the piano catches fire and the audience dies.

Just the idea that Bush took until TODAY to send his “brilliant Sovietologist” to Tblisi is a joke. Ok, its not a joke, its shameful.

Justin Roberts and Liam Davis rocked the kids at the awesome Theatricum Botanicum in Topanga Canyon today. The highlight of the show was the thrill-tastic Meltdown, with the kids screaming their heads off.

big oil gets even more of our public money

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

Last week the worlds biggest oil company Exxon-Mobil announced its largest profitable quarter ever, yet again. Hey, I have no problem with profits, but not at the expense of the taxpayer. Let’s face it, big oil is getting tax breaks, tax credits and government subsidies and we are picking ip the tab while they screw us for record profits. Does anyone really beleive the price of gas is going to drop? Why would any corporation stop making such profits when they don’t have to, and still get backed up by the government the way they do.

Now, all of you remember those “economic stimulus” checks we got this year as a tax rebate. This morning Marketplace reported on a study that shows that money predominantly went to spending on staples - gas, food and energy. What a surprise.

So, big oil wins again. The govenment gave us our tax dollars back so we could give them to the oil companies.

Congress has to have the political backbone to end the corporate welfare offered to the oil industrial complex. Can Obama lead us there?

bike, bus, train

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

It’s no secret to anyone that this year has been a tough one economically. Most of us are feeling the “downturn” and having to make changes to compensate. This spring John and I decided to go down to one car and I morphed into a public transit geek.

After experimenting with my Eagle Rock to Downtown commute over various route combinations I settled on bike, bus, train. (Or more specifically: bike/bus/bike/train/train - train/train/bike.)

I ride my bike to the bus stop, take my bike on the bus to Old Town, ride over to the Gold Line station, park in a bike locker, train to Union Station, switch to the Red Line and emerge across the street from my office at Pershing Square.

In reverse, the only difference is that intsead of taking the bus, I ride my bike the 4.5 miles home from Pasadena.

BRILLIANT. Here’s pics from today’s commute.

shouldn’t we all be blogging from our iphones?

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

It’s absurd to think that it’s the iPhone that is enabling and motivating my blogging…but it is. I know it sounds cliché to say that the iPhone is a life changing device, but let me be clear - IT IS. Many of my posts will be made from my iPhone, many directly from public transport.

Ah metablogs. I think this calls for a pic.
